"The purpose of the list is to provide a forum for people to
discuss the San Diego goth, industrial and underground scene."
1) When I subscribe to the list, do I have to introduce myself?
Nope, not unless you want to. Members are not required to give an introduction at all. But it might be a good way to let people get to know you, if you are into that kind of thing.
2) What are you allowed to post to the list?
It is much easier to say what you cannot post to the list (which, if you read on, you will discover.) Anything that relates to the San Diego goth, industrial and underground scene is, of course, allowed, and almost everything outside of that is allowed with a proper "off topic" {OT} designation. For specifics on what falls into what category, please see the SDGoth List Rules.
3) What type of music discussion is "on topic"?
Discussion of all music types is allowed, with an understanding that this is a goth/industrial/underground list. If the discussion becomes disruptive to the list, a moderator is allowed to stop it.
4) Are one-line, original posts allowed?
Yes. However, consecutive one-liners that become disruptive to the list are not. If they do, a moderator can issue warnings.
5) Okay, then what about one-line responses to other people's posts?
One-line RESPONSES to posts are allowed AS LONG AS a quoted reference from the email that is being responded to is included to give the one-liner some context. If you just post a one-line response without any quoted reference, you are going to make people wonder what you are talking about and are probably going to get a moderator warning if you keep it up.
6) How much of the original post do I need to quote when responding?
The short answer is, only as much of the original post as you need to make your response make sense. In general, it is considered bad netiquette to include the ENTIRE original post because it makes finding your reply more difficult and takes up a great deal of bandwidth. So, when responding to a post, please quote only the relevant portions to which you wish to reply.
7) I found this great web site I want to share with the group. Is that okay?
Sure, as long as you don't post numerous consecutive emails each containing a single URL.
8) How many can I post before it becomes "numerous"?
This isn't a "hard and fast" rule; it is more a common sense thing. Doing several in a row or several in one day will probably get rather annoying rather quickly. If the moderators feel those types of posts are becoming disruptive to the list, they will let you know.
9) I found this great picture/story/eighth wonder of the world. Can I attach it to a post and send it to the list?
Absolutely not. Attachments are NOT allowed. Ever. Period. For an easy rule of thumb, if the list members are going to have download it, don't post it.
10) I want to advertise my business to the list members. How do I?
Well, if it is a goth related business, mark your post {OT} and make the post. Keep in mind, that if you do it excessively, you are probably going to get moderated for spamming the list. Spam is strictly forbidden. If your business is not goth related, we would ask that you do not advertise here. This is a discussion forum, not a free billboard.
11) I am a club owner/band member/concert coordinator/promoter is there a specific way I should let members know about it?
Actually, yes, there is. ALL club/event announcements should be sent to events@sdgoth.org. This is our specific events list. It goes out to people who just want to know what is happening and then to the general list as well. There are some restrictions on how much "announcing" you can do:
a) If you are a San Diego event, you can post one announcement per day, per event.
b) If you are an Orange/LA County event, you can post one announcement per week, per event.
c) If you are anywhere else, I'm sorry, but we just don't care.
12) What if I want to arrange a group activity? Does that go to the events list too?
Absolutely. The events list is for ANYONE who wants to announce something that is going on. You might ask, "What qualifies as an event?" Anything that has got a set time, day, place...those are events. The moderators do have the right to refuse a submission if it isn't appropriate or doesn't relate to the scene.
13) Can I use my signature file when I post?
Sure, as long as it meets one condition. Signature files can be a maximum length of 4 lines long. And before you get too sneaky and think you can define a "line" as taking up half a page, keep in mind that the List defines a line as having anywhere from 0-80 characters. As long as your sig file is 4 lines or under, feel free.
14) Can I swear in a post?
If you really feel like it, go right ahead. Profanity is allowed on the list. This is a part of "free speech," but if that profanity is part of, or turns into, a personal attack, it will be dealt with as such. Take a look at the List Rules for more specifics.
15) So, personal attacks are not okay?
That's right. Personal attacks are NOT allowed. If a person engages in a personal attack, they will be given one warning and the next offense will result in banning from the List. We are interested in open discussion, not open roasting.
16) What if I want to post something just to tick people off?
Well, you probably won't be very popular, but you also run the risk of being designated a "troll." "Trolling" on the SDGoth list is definitely not allowed. The definition of trolling for this list is:
"Trolling in the Internet sense is when somebody posts inflammatory messages designed to stir up trouble on a list or newsgroup. The sole purpose of the troll being to garner attention and hijack the forum from its normal function."
If the moderators determine your post is a "troll," you will be given one warning, and then booted from the list the next time you do it. Generally, it's just not a good idea.
17) What if I just want to stir up some drama with a good old-fashioned flame war?
We recommend if you are looking for a good flame war, go find another list. Flames will NOT be tolerated! That's all, they just won't. If a flame war starts, you can be sure that one of the moderators will send a warning to the participants and make a public post that a topic has been declared a "flame" and has been killed. Leave the drama at the clubs.
18) There was a really fascinating thread going on that I wanted to send to my best friend, who isn't subscribed to the list. Is that okay?
No, actually, it's not. This list is a private list, and all of the posts are considered property of the list, not public domain. You can forward a post to a non-list member only after you have received permission from ALL people who have contributed to the thread.
19) A list member sent a really nasty email to me off-list and I want to post it and respond to it on the list. Because they are a list member, there isn't a problem right?
Wrong. List member or not, email sent to you off list needs to STAY off list. If you post it and then reply to it, you are in violation of one of our bigger rules. That kind of behaviour is classified as a "personal attack" and there are serious consequences attached. If you just respond to it on the list without posting it, you will just seem bizarre because no one will have the foggiest idea what you are talking about. Don't post private emails. And if you have sent someone a private email, and they post it to the list, BE SURE to let the moderators know so they can take care of it immediately.
20) Can I post anonymously?
A person is allowed to post anonymously but it is EXTREMELY discouraged. Please be aware that anonymous posters/posts will be looked at very carefully...if it becomes a problem, the moderators are allowed to take action.
21) A discussion thread is getting really disruptive to the list. What can I do?
Any complaints or comments about the list or postings should be directed to the moderators. You can contact them directly by sending an email to moderators@sdgoth.org. If you think a thread has become disruptive to the function of the list, register a complaint with them. Be sure to include in it WHY you think the thread is disruptive. Complaints without reasons won't be considered valid. When at least three people make valid complaints about an "off topic" thread, the moderators will discuss the issue and if they agree, will kill the thread at their earliest convenience. When more than three people make valid complaints about an "on topic" thread, the moderators will discuss the issue and the thread will be killed only after a unanimous vote.
22) How do I subscribe to just the Events list...or unsubscribe from the members list...or unsubscribe from both?
All of that information is on the www.sdgoth.org site. If you have any problems, contact the moderators.
